The CEO of Pharco Corporation, Dr. Sherine Helmy, had a déjà-vu moment as he heard the news that the value of the Egyptian pound was experiencing another drop against the U.S. dollar in January 2023. His father, the founder of the family pharmaceutical business, had experienced a similar predicament in the late 1980s. Dr. Helmy Sr.’s natural business acumen and single-minded focus on the customer helped the company overcome difficult times and established Pharco as a household name. Working together, the first two generations were able to discover untapped business opportunities through targeting multiple consumer segments and even businesses. They offered high-quality products at reasonable prices to a large yet underprivileged market and expanded the business through local and global acquisitions. However, Dr. Helmy Jr. contemplated whether this business model would still be viable with global political upheavals and the ensuing economic crises plaguing businesses. Moreover, he wondered how Pharco’s corporate culture and core values could be maintained across generational changes. This case is intended for graduate and undergraduate students in strategic management, business innovation, and responsible leadership.
